“Before moving back to Korea, I took a one year long break to travel through Latin America where I came across people from different cultures and backgrounds. The conversations I had and the philosophies we exchanged changed my perspective on many levels. My one year trip to Latin America altered my vision of what I would like to do in the future.
During my time working with multinational companies on Geoje island, I realized that the community here is as diverse as it could possibly be and how exciting it would be to have a platform where we could all gather and interact. That’s when my dream of starting Geoje International Center (GIC) was born.
However, easier said than done, GIC came with its own set of turbulences. After a lot of planning, hard work and co-operation from volunteers, GIC was able to organize its first fundraising event for the Philippines Hayan victims in November, 2013 contributing an astounding 3 million won to UNICEF.
At GIC, we aim to develop an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, where people from different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds can network with relative ease. The plan is to make GIC a center point in the community for people to learn and develop new talents and meet new people from around the world. For this, the role of our volunteers and staff is crucial. It is fortunate for me to have an enthusiastic and dedicated team, who have been my support in working toward my vision. Together with them I aim to fulfil our ultimate goal – To provide a means for exchange between locals and foreigners; contributing to forming a positive image of Geoje as a global cultural city.”
